I would like my header and menu to look like this:

I can get the left menu to show, but get messed up on the rest.  Can anyone help me with the header?

How are you trying to do it now?  For something like that I think you might be best off using the custom links.  See the custom links section here: https://efiction.org/wiki/index.php5?title=How_to_change_the_site_menu

I was setting the menu in the header.  Should I be setting up the separate arrays in the default?!

the books  as well as the center text, are the background in the header, I want to align the menu in four separate arrays, one on each of the four pages left blank in the background.

This is pretty easy to do. Do it in header.tpl. You don't have to make arrays, but you can. I divided my header up similarly ( http://www.timeturner.net/fics/index.php) using variables like {home} Check the skinning category in the wiki for header.tpl...it should tell you how to do it there.

Sorry, I'm not following this at all, so forgive me if this is elementary.

Yes, the menu should be defined in header.tpl.  Don't touch anything in default_tpls, if that's what you mean.

I don't understand the reference to "four pages left blank in the background", (there's no link to your site...) but assuming you mean the two books on either end, you can do like so.... (for the one on the right)

{home}
{account}
{tos} - or whatever you named it (check in Admin > Page Links)
{rules}

So long as you use whatever appears in the Name field of the entry in Admin > Page Links, it should work no trouble.

For more info, see the link that I gave above, and also https://efiction.org/wiki/index.php5?title=Universal_page_links

I'm not sure what your variables.php situation is, but if there is one it may suffice to either leave out the menu definition or to just have one normal array.  I'm still a little fuzzy on all the tricks of variables.php.

Thanks all!  I solved my problem with the header menu.  It looks great now.  I actually took the time to do an online tutorial of basic xhtml and css, and that helped me make sense of what you all were talking about. πŸ˜‰
