i don't know if this is the right place to pose this question, but how do i restrict googlebot from indexing my site? thanks.

You can use a robots.txt file. Do a search for that and you'll find what you need; there's lots of sites that talk about it. Some crawlers don't necessary follow the rules, but I'm pretty sure Google's do.

Most legitimate bots will follow robots.txt
If you've got a Google account you can do it automatically, Google's help page is also quite helpful to write a robots.txt manually
