Carissa, the test tiki is now installed, if you want to come and have a look, PM me and i will give you a logon and admin account and the url.

It is unskinned at the moment and i have just used my current database and duplicated it so that it is not empty.

That way at least you can get a look at it from both a user and admin POV without the hassle of setting one up and then make your decision from there.

why is nothing ever easy?

I was taking a look for bridges with SMF and wiki's and found that Media Wiki has a bridge with/for SMF
http://www.excalibur-partners.com/archives/26

Don't know if that's of any help. I too don't necessarily like how wiki's work, I for one don't like the bbcode/markup.

Mediawiki does have several bridges with SMF. Some of them don't work. *shrugs*

ETA: I wasn't going to announce this until it was further along, but I installed a wiki a few weeks ago. We are working on setting up the preliminary categories/structure and populating it with a few articles. Look for it in a few weeks. If you would like to help add articles, send me a PM. I will be out of town for the rest of the week, so I will get back to you on Sunday with the url.

Bonjour .

I have been a lurker for a long time and used eFiction a while ago, always remembered the software subconsciously and that it had a lot of potential. I am amazed by how far it has gotten, and the improvements, amazing and wow. I seem to remember the time before the new administrator, Tammy as well somewhat and when she joined.

I used to have an account, but I long forgot it, so I made a new one, and I applaud your work so far. Hence, because of this, I registered on the wiki and would be more then happy to help out. I am a wiki expert and am a sysop on the largest known wiki in the world (AboutUs).

Keep up the amazing work.

NickBurrus.

Edit: I am curious why are new members given the right to Peer Review themselves (Mark Edits as Patrolled)?

Edit 2: Your Robots.txt on the main site blocks all bots, so this means Web Archive will never record you, rankings will drop by several thousands on Google, Yahoo, Live, and other search engines, so that means your only source of adversing is by word of mouth not by searching?

You're not supposed to register on the wiki, you're supposed to register on the forums and use the same account. There are no instructions about this on the wiki, because it's not finished yet. I don't know a thing about wiki software, so if there are default settings that don't make sense, it's because we are just learning and don't know to change them. We're kind of flying blind here, and the documentation is too huge to learn everything in a few weeks. πŸ™ Your advise in this area will be greatly appreciated. πŸ™‚

The robots.txt does not block all robots from the site. It allows only the ones that I know of that are legitimate (including google) but allows them only access to certain folders. That is because there is no point in the robots indexing certain folders, but they are allowed access to all folders with actual content. It does disallow most bots though, because we were getting a lot of bandwidth used from certain robots browsing the site for hours at a time, several times a day. If you know of a bot that needs to be allowed, please let me know via PM or in a new topic. This thread is not really the place for this discussion.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm...there a double SQL bridge connecting this forum to the wiki then? I have plenty of experience with wikis, I'd be more then happy to help out. I am not the best at designing skins or the skin software, I am more for content and pushing a wiki to it's limits, but I know people who can manipulate skins pretty easily.

The wiki documentation is messy, sadly, AboutUs did an interesting thing, they wrote their own while the community learned it. The community wrote their documentation was a unique thing about growing with the wiki. Perhaps eFiction can do the same? You can give me a list of things you'd like to get done, and I can put them in my schedule. :]. If you need to prove that I am the sysop on AboutUs feel free to ask. :] I can edit my user page to say something.

PM'd about Robots. :]

It looks like the link to register on the wiki redirects to the forums so you probably registered in the right place. I am working on redesigning this site and I will probably redesign the wiki to match then. I would actually like to figure out the skinning stuff myself...I am a web designer by profession so I hope I'll be able to do it! If not, I'll let you know.

Right now, our focus with the wiki is organizing and adding content, which includes instructions on how to use it. I was just going to copy over a few of the FAQs from MediaWiki and Wikipedia but your idea is good too. I'm afraid to start with nothing though...people need somewhere to start.

I do have a few questions though that I haven't been able to find answers to. One is can I add more formatting buttons to the text editor? I'd like to at least add buttons for more headings as I believe proper headings are important when organizing a page but they only provide the option for one.

Hm...can't remember the second one...will check back later.

Hello again.

The wiki has a 'registration' right on top, which is usually a universal way of registering for a wiki. Some places bridge their databases, it is not recommended by MediaWiki and invalidates the warranty for support often (so basically you're on your own), kind of like how SMF is, as is. To add more formatting options, it takes manipulation with the source at times. Look at: http://www.aboutus.org/User_talk:VartanSimonian/Archive/10-29-2007_to_11-14-2007#Template:GoogleDoubleLink

Hmm...I installed a fresh copy of the eFiction software, I can help with slides and starting to write them from scratch. I will be leaving tomorrow morning and won't be back until Wednesday afternoon, have some business to attend to. :] Any questions feel free to ask.

Our "bridge" is not really a bridge. From what I can tell, it just uses SMF for authentication. The users aren't transfered to the wiki unless they actually go there and log in. *shrugs* I got it right off the mediawiki site, and I suppose I can survive if it does invalidate the warranty for my free software but I don't see why it would. It's just one file in the extensions folder and a bit of code in the localsettings.php file. Seems like perfectly legitimate uses of those files since they are there for customization.

I'll look into your link. Seems pretty complicated right now. I may just look for an extension for a WYSIWYG editor to install. Wikicode is weird anyway!

I know WikiCode is weird. xD. I really need to start hanging out with the dev guys over at AboutUs, even the creator of Wiki works there. But, I'm in love with content. Good luck with the WYSIWYG editor. I haven't seen one in a wiki yet, be the first. =D. So, you guys worked with editthis.info to connect to your SMF database? As Is software is odd in my opinion, at least most places still give you support anyway. :]. And, yeah, it's complicated...every complicated. You are stepping into a brand new world.

By the way, how you liking the formatting tags? xD

: for blockquote
'' '' for italic
''' ''' for bold
[[ ]] for hyperlink interwiki (or [[PageName|clicky]])
[ ] for hyperlink outside (or [ https://efiction.org eFiction])
== == h1
== == h2
[[Image:]] for uploaded images
for image
<nowiki></nowiki> to ignore formatting
--~~~~ your signature.
