Okay this is an experiment, but I've set up a Wiki for eFiction.  Ideally this will let us collaboratively develop better documentation for the various versions of eFiction.  There is very little there right now except a few bits I picked up from the docs in 2.0 to get us started.

The site is: http://editthis.info/efiction/

Oddly, I just set up one for my archives documentation, although it's mostly author end documentation.  πŸ˜€ http://www.kirari-pgsm.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:PGSM_Fanfiction_Help

I'll see if there's anything in there that could transfer.  I think the author end documentation is one feature that would really benefit from being expanded (at least the basic stuff - how to upload stories, submit to challenge, ect)

I don't know if you've ever seen the documentation for MediaWiki, but it's documentation (in wiki format  ) has seperate sections for user and admin documentation so while you can edit your own help files, you can also send your users to a centralized help center.

Skins made by Kali are no longer supported!

I've been adding to the wiki, and to be honest I can't stand it. The fomatting isn't coming out right, though it could be something I've missed.  πŸ˜•

Mediawiki has it's own form of markup.  It does take some getting used to.

I'm lost with wiki coding, but I was creating the same thing in italian πŸ™‚
Just a little bit of php and html.
It's mostly a credited translation of the FAQ, with question that italian users asked me (mmm... I think there's a huge error here somewhere... blea, my english always *censor*).
I'm also translating the e2 pack (to put here) ^_^Y
If you are creating a multilanguage wiki, you can take all my text and add them *nod* *nod*
Let me know if you're interested, I'll email them when I'm done! (or I give you the URL)

Tammy & Carissa, what are the plans for a wiki, are we still going to use one, or no? I was considering adding information to the one linked here, but I was unsure if it's still in use. I know we also had one installed on the site.

I don't think anyone ever checks that one.

I think this would be a good idea. Only, please, keep everything "efiction" on one site, so there is one official place to look for. You can install eFicwiki on this site, right, Tammy?

There was an eFiction wiki installed on the site, but I believe it not longer exits.

Can I resurrect this topic? I think there's a major need of a wiki, or a comprehensive online manual. I'd love to d FAQ's but solely it's a challenge to keep maintaining in that manner.

I'm no mod, but I love the idea of a Wiki. I think many people have an area which they are particularly well-versed in, but not every aspect of eFic (I'd say only the mods are that smart :D), so I'd love to help out with the "Beginner Basics" of eFic while maybe the mods would contribute articles to the Wiki about the nittier-grittier aspects, or even just weird FAQs. I, for one, would like to know how exactly to perform an upgrade (e.g. from 3.3.1 to 3.4.2). Common questions around that might include, what files/folders do I need to upload if I made changes to the skins, or added blocks/modules, and don't want to have to do them all over again (unless they're incompatible with x version). A Wiki would be much better than the forum in that respect, because searching is more comprehensive and immediate and doesn't just look for "keywords" anywhere in a post, but in titles and the like.

I just put a tiki wiki in on my site, and found it to be much easier to manage and learn than mediawiki. It is also much more feature rich, although you have the option to turn things off you do not wish to use.  It does has its own syntax, which can be annoying, but with the tiki, you can set up content templates to help your members. If they were there in media, i gave up trying to find them. Also the tiki lets admins control the access to the wiki on a very very detailed level and you can also skin it too to make it look more integrated into the site.

I would be happy to help with the wiki (atlhough i must confess i found the mediawiki absolutely nightmare to deal with).

I also just moved host and have an absolute ton of space, so if you want to play with a test install i can set you up a subdomain and ftp if you like, to give it a trial run. Or, i will be setting up my own test tiki (probably later today - to test skins and upgrades etc ) so if you want me to admin you there once it is done so you can come have a look to see how it compares to the media wiki, you are more than welcome.

my current active tiki is : http://www.pretendercentre.com/pretenderpedia/

it is still in its infancy and most pages are only skeletons, but we are getting there  πŸ˜€

Can you bridge tikiwiki with SMF?

To be pretty frank, I don't find any wiki software to be intuitive or easy to use, but I think there are advantages of going with mediawiki (though I am by no means, a huge fan of the software) is that people will be more familiar with it due to its popularity, and the fact that it powers wikipedia. Also, it has an extensive developers community, and is well documented (though not so well organized).

I like what wikis do, I just don't like how they work.

no bridge that i am aware of and the community is pretty poorly developed too I have found for the tiki. Luckily I have managed to fix most of the problems myself, as if you wait for help from their support community, you can be waiting a long time. And their tiki for dummies is not very good either, in fact none of the documentation is developed enough to be of much help.

I like the idea of a wiki as well, but yeah, it is a headache to learn and I agree that people are far more familiar with mediawiki format. I installed that first (for exactly the same reasons) but after a few days threw the towel in and abandoned it completely as it was just too much hard work and everything was so unbelievably difficult.

Just had a look at both smf and tiki forums and coudn't find anythign on a bridge. I cannot imagine the tikiwiki would be bridgebale with  anything,  it just seems too unfriendly to want to play with others. (it has its own forum so i think it has been made quite deliberately as a standalone - the forum is very crappy though and cannot compare to smf). What it does have that i really llike is a FAQ section that has an ability to add suggestions by members which i am finding really uesful in contstructing a help guide for members.

either way,  i would be happy to help with an efic wiki, whcih i believe woudl be an invaluable resource to complement the forum here
