Before you go any further, I think you should stop and do a bit of research. Make sure you've read ALL the files in the docs folder and that you understand exactly what you're supposed to do for the eFiction side of things.

Then, make sure you are aware of how your host connects using ftp. Some hosts don't let you have access to any other folder than the public_html, so if you are installing it in the 'root directory' that may be the right thing.

Then, make sure you know how your ftp program works. You may need to enter the correct path to get into the public_html folder. Check the documentation your host sent you when you signed up for your account to find out what that is.

These forums are not really the place to get support for these last two things. We just don't have the necessary information to help you. We don't know how your host has things set up and we don't know what ftp program you're using or how it works.

If you continue to have problems not connected to the script (and none of them so far have been), then ask your host to help you. They will be a little bit better able to provide you support because they know all about their settings. If you are using a free account with no support, you might consider paying for support.

Finally, GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. If you see an option (such as the above mentioned binary vs. ASCII), google it and find out what it is and which you should check instead of just guessing.

I'm not trying to be mean or insult you (and I hope I haven't), I just think, like the title of this topic says, you are in over your head, and a little research will go a long way to helping you solve your issues. There is some basic knowledge you need to have before you try to start your own site, but it's all pretty easy to figure out with a little leg-work.

Actually I did read everything in the Docs file...

I am a very thorough person and tried to do everything on my own first before I came here and asked....  I didn't want to ask questions here unless I absolutely did not know the answer to them.

And yes... I think I'm downloading efiction into the proper directory because there is no option to change it in my file manager or on the Smart FTP program...

I however don't see anything about what files  to change the CHMOD on.. so if anyone could tell me that would be great.

In the Readme:

1) If you intend to write the story texts to the server or allow image uploads
CHMOD the folder you intend to store the storis in to 777.  If this folder is
missing the script will attempt to create it for you during the install.

2) Move config.php from the docs folder to the main eFiction folder. If the
config.php is missing the install script will attempt to create it, but it's
best if you move it.

3) CHMOD config.php to 666.

And.... I'm back...

Okay... soooo I learned my website WAS NOT registered...  so I asked for it to be and now my Cpanel has changed drastically as did my file Manager...  I've got the proper CHMODS changed and so I was hopeful I could finally start the install but when I click on my temporary url I get the following message:

404 Not Found

The requested URL /hauntedsona.com/ was not found on this server.
Apache/2.0.55 (Red Hat) Server at 79.170.40.36 Port 80

And when I try the Actual Domain URL... I get re-directed to a search engine....

I thought I was finally good to go....  but now I am ready to give up  πŸ˜₯

What do I do now??

Contact your host...this is not an efiction problem, and there is no possible way we could know what's causing it.

Your website is not registered. Just looking you up on WhoIs shows the site isn't registered. Did you go through a registry service or is the webhost suppose to provide it for you?
