okay I think deleting everything was a very stupid and very bad idea!!!
I re-downloaded everything as it was on my old computer (I used smart ftp To upload the files in bulk to my file manager) and now the server won't connect!! well it does for a few seconds then disconnects.
I really don't know what to do now!!
Check your FTP password.
I have no password.... the field is blank.... I've tried every which way to get smart ftp to get it to connect... but its not working.... Did I break my website??
I can upload it using the file manager 20 files at a time.... but I can't upload the index.html because its 0mg or something like that? I read somewhere else on here to open it and write like a word in it and save it so that it will download.... I'm assuming "Microsoft Picture it!!" isn't supposed to be what the files are opened with??
I used winRAR to unzip the files....
if you have forgot your password then you should be able to reset it via your servers control panel have you also tried logging in with the same password that you use to log into your cpanel as initially its usually set to that password

Didn't forget the password... I just know that when I did it on my old computer... I used 1 of two passwords... and it worked fine... I've tried both and it will connect for like 2 seconds then disconnect... I will try to reset the password and see if that works.
Okay so I've been trying eeverything I can to get my FTP server to connect.... I changed the password, downloaded several new FTP programs and none of them worked.
I don't mind the arduous task of uploading everything Via my file manager.... but I still have a problem... some files won't upload because they are 0mg... like I mentioned before I read on here that I should open it and be able type a word into it and save it.
Well I tried that but the files are opened in Microsoft Picture It!! which doesn't allow me to open these files... Should I have unzipped eficiton with WinZip rather than winrar??
Please I really need help... This is stressing me out to the point of tears. I really want my efiction site to work, I am willing to give someone access to my control panel if need be to help get my efiction site on its legs.
If the password doesn't work, you are going to have to talk to your host about it. We can't help you.
Edit: Open the files with Notepad. Right click... open with... Notepad. That should stop it from opening with Picture It.

okay so I'm manually uploading efiction file by file... (was never able to get the ftp server to work) I'm not even half way done because of all the files within the files and such... but I just noticed I can upload in either Binary mode or ASCII....
I've been uploading everything in Binary mode..... is that okay??

Generally, it's images in binary and everything else in ASCII.

Okay so I've screwed up again... alright well I don't know what to do anymore... I will contact my host and inquire about the FTP issues I'm having... and I will once again delete efiction from my file manger and start over..... again.
If you're having FTP problems one solution that you can try is http://net2ftp.com, a web-based FTP browser/uploader. See if it helps.
Okay.... it only took me 3 weeks but I fixed my FTP problem 😀
Now I can't remember which files I had to change the CHMOD for and where I was supposed to move them too... maybe my public_html folder??.... oh and everything automatically downloaded into the root file of my file manager... when I got this far last time the install wouldn't run and I was told that it was because I didn't load it into the file manager right.... I was told to move everything into one file but in actuality I can't do that because some files can't be moved...
You need to download everything into public_html.
Okay... I will go and re-do the download again..... 😡
