Hey there,
I have been looking into getting my own fan-fiction website for a long time.. didn't know where to start until I found efiction totally by chance. Okay so I tackled the hurdle of getting a host... its fanst.com btw, and now I am sitting here with a deer in the headlights look on my face because I have absolutely no idea how to get efiction from my computer to my website control panel...
I need guidance.... how do I turn a blank white page into my dream fan-fiction archive?? I do have efiction on my computer but I think I'm missing a program it needs so I can open for example.... the skins so I can edit them and make it so that the logo says my website name.
I am really lost, confused and overwhelmed right now... somebody please help me!!
You need to make sure that your host has mysql database and can set up a databse for your efiction archive.
You need to make sure your host can use php files.
Once you are sure of those things, and have a database, then upload all your efiction files to your server, and put all the correct info in your config file so that it can connect to your database.
If you need more help than that, then read the docs that come with the download.
Whoever said nothing is impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

My host can use both PHP & mySQL π And someone was nice and patient enough to get on MSN messenger and walk me through the process of of uploading all the files via FTP... now I tried very hard to figure out the rest of the process on my own but I still have a blank website... I have no clue how to start building my website ... I've clicked on everything in my control panel, I've read everything there too.. but I am still very stuck...
Thank you by the way for telling me about the PHP & mySQL... I had no idea my host needed to support these things... okay I'm off to my control panel to see what I can do.
Read the doc's that came with your download. They should be in the docs folder. In particular, something like instalhelp.htm would be a good thing to look at.

There's no file anywhere in my eficiton folder called installhelp.htm.....according to the girl that helped me out on messenger I was going to need to make some kind of database on mySQL to save the efiction files to once I uploaded them via ftp... the files are all in my file manager list on my control panel.... I have them loaded... I just don't know what the heck I'm doing and must sound like an idiot lol...
What control panel does your site use?
What control panel does your site use?
I'm not sure what control panel my site uses... it just says " Fan. St. Let the Love Grow" at the top of the page... I also just read that the DNS changes take 24 hours to take affect. But I bought the domain on Monday night and it is now Thursday... I was told that it could take up to 72 hours.
that and I can only access my website via a temp url at the moment, efiction is ready to install but I think I have to wait for those DNS changes to take effect....
You should be able to install it through the temp site. The control panel is going to be an area of your host's website (that points to your site) that lets you control things like your e-mail, databases, etc. You need to go into the control panel and set up a database.

I have a mySQL database... I set that up before I uploaded the efiction program... I was told I was going to need to save the efiction files to it after I got them into the file manager
I don't know the name of the gal that helped me with some of this on messenger but she had me set the chmod to 666 for the install file after I moved it from the file it was in to my main root directory in the File manager.. after that I changed the chmod for Stories to 777....
She said the install was supposed to start when I went to my site url... but when I type in the url it tells me the site doesn't exist... When I type in the temp url I get a blank white page that says
"Coming soon to Fan St
.This is your index.html page please replace this when you upload your website."
Any my control panel has the following options in it:
- E-mail Configuration
- Web Tools
- Website Diagnostics
- javascript maker
- web resources
- E- Commerce
- File Manager
- Website Reporting
- CGI/PHP Scripts
- Web Mail
- Web Builder
- Support Database
- Internet access
Delete (or rename) the index.html (html not php!) file in your file manager. Your host had a temporary index file there. Since it's a .html file it's being displayed instead of the .php file.

Okay I went into my file manager and I have the following: index.php & index.tpl
I also found a file called public.html and in it was an index.html which I went ahead and deleted...
I should mention that when I uploaded efiction I did not put it into a single file... I highlighted everything and clicked upload...
the install still won't start.... π₯
Sounds like you didn't keep the folder structure intact. In the root folder you definitely shouldn't have both index.php and index.tpl. The files need to be in the same structure they were in when you unzipped the archive.
So what now?? Do I delete everything and then upload efiction to the manager??
You've got to get the files there in the correct order and in the correct place. You found a file called public.html or a folder called public_html. If it's a folder called public_html. That's where you're supposed to upload the eFiction files. Move them up in the same structure as in the .zip. Where there's a subfolder in your your download you need a subfolder on the server.

Tammy I can't thank you enough for all the help you've been giving me...
So I'm going to attempt to fix the mess that is my file manager and I will let you know if it works.
