I was thinking about this... I use stars on my site, and I have the problem of everyone rating either 10's or 1's. I was thinking that adding in a default rating of 5 to every story at first might help balance the stories, and also help show the slight differences between stories of 4.5 stars a little better. It seems like every story is averagely rated 4.5, or not rated at all. One rating drastically changes the rating if no one else rates it.. especially if they just decide to give it a 1 for no reason.
Maybe having a base, in the middle rating might be better, having the user ratings move it up or down, instead of just declaring it.
Of course, all existing stories would have to be given a Rating only review of 5 for every chapter.
What do you think?

You should be able to change this in phpMyAdmin.
Ah, yeah, you're right! π So no Mod is necessary, it can work with one little change.
I'd still like to hear people's thoughts and opinions on this though. I might not be thinking of everything.
Would that be changing all reviews to start with 5 star rating, or would it edit the chapter to list it first? How would that affect the review count and calculation?

I think assigning all new stories a default of 5 would be inflating ratings for bad stories. You'd still need to MOD the files because by default everything starts at 0. And to include that 5 in there you'd have to redo how the rating is calculated.
