I have run into several cases where visitors are requesting the ability to post longer chapters. From my searching this may be able to be done by changing the chapter field in the database from text to longtext.
Are there any dangers to doing this? Will future upgrades have problems due to this change?

The danger is you're making your database much larger and therefore slower. I doubt it will affect future updates. My 2 cents? I wouldn't do it. A chapter long enough to require a longtext field would be horribly long (more than 16 pages). People on slower connections would have problems uploading chapters that long and most likely reading them as well. You'll run into timeouts.
I used custom fanfic software with longtext and never experienced any timeout or any other problems.
