Ok, I just had another good look at your site. This isn't really a skinning issue because it's working on other pages, just not the one you linked to. (It's working here: http://www.themasque.net/efiction/browse.php?type=categories&id=3). I don't really know why it's not working on the page you linked to, but I have to ask, just to double-check, that you actually have descriptions entered for those two categories?

Getting the images to show up is tricky. You just enter the name of the file (no path info--example "image.jpg"). Make sure the image is in the images folder of the skin, and not the main images folder.

You can see each of the categories on the main page, including their descriptions and image (the bullet is set as the category image for each category)

Admittedly, this may turn out to be stupid because I can't see your site, but the index page only shows parent categories, and the categories you linked to are sub-categories. Therefore, you can't tell by looking at the index page whether or not they have descriptions. The only way you can know for sure is to check in your category settings.

Admin>categories>click on the plus to expand the parent>edit.

Well on this page:

http://www.themasque.net/efiction/browse.php?type=categories&id=2

I can see a description on the first category (The Salon).  That tells me it's working.

Unfortunately I guess its impossible. Would be nice if someone could confirm that but at this point I'll accept it.

Tammy, thats the sub category with a longer description created with the same name as the parent category.

It seems to be the only way I can have that descriptive text on the page. The only problem is it creates a useless sub category.

Unfortunately, you're trying to do something that the script isn't set up to do.  If you want to do this, you'll need to MOD the browse/categories.php file.

Uhm, I do have a problem with my categories too. It''s different to lonebard's, but... I thought I don't need another topic.
Well, I would love to have the categories on my index site as a block like

Television [205]
BΓΌcher [92]
Filme [22]
Spiele [1]
HΓΆrspiele [0]

But on the categories main site within lets say three columns.
I know where to edit that, but as soon as I change the look to three columns it's changed on the index too. I also tried to change the look of the index via the variables.php but it didn't work. πŸ™
Any idea what I did wrong?

Tiny addendum: I just wanna have the sub-categories in three columns. The main columns can remain as they are.^^
