When I edited my own story as an admin, this error message appeared at the top, after editing it.

Do you have Debug turned on? If so turn it off. Especially if you can get your editing to work despite the message.

The only time you need to have debug on is when your efic site is doing super weird things. Then turning it on allows us to see what might be the problem. But if you keep it on all the time  it will from time to time come up with "errors that aren't really errors." So by default you should keep debug off unless there really is a problem with your site.

You should also keep it off unless you're debugging a problem because while the information it outputs will help you find bugs, it can also help hackers.
