URL to your eFiction: http://drfa.seventh-star.net
Version of eFiction: 3.5
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?: No, N/A
Version of PHP: 5.2.6
Version of MySQL: 5.0.51a-community
Have you searched for your problem: yes
If so, what terms did you try: emails not sending, email issues, email mx, password sent: no
State the nature of your problem: I had a user email me directly at my email address (the same one that the Admin email is set to on my domain), saying she has not been able to sign up for an account. She uses a GMail address. When I checked the action log, I found her username, so it looks like her account was created just fine, but the welcome email with her password in it (because I have passwords set automatically, rather than something the user can initially create) never sends. The log says emails from 12/10/08 onward have not been sending, and I haven't the faintest idea why. I'm not sure what the exact date I upgraded to 3.5 is, but I think it was before 12/10. Furthermore, I haven't made any changes to my subdomain, hosting account, email, etc.

I have the following SMTP settings set in the Settings/Email Settings section of the admin panel:
SMTP host: mail.seventh-star.net
SMTP username: azurite@seventh-star.net
SMTP password: My password

In my Mail application, the settings for outgoing mail are the same, except the SMTP username doesn't have an '@,' it has a '+' as specified by my host's email settings. I tried that as well, and I also tried changing the SMTP hostname to sh79.surpasshosting.com, my host (and my specific server on the host). I've never had any problems with the above, but with a '+' in the username or the host name instead of the domain name, I got the following error:

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to sh79.surpasshosting.com:25 (Connection timed out) in /home/******/public_html/drfa/includes/smtp_include.php on line 106

I also tried changing the port for the SMTP by adding ':465' to sh79.surpashosting.com. I didn't get an error, but I did see a message that the email could not be sent.

I found the sticky topic about SPF records, but I don't understand what the wizard on the site is asking for, and the so-called explanation of the syntax didn't make sense to me, either.

What I don't understand is how I can still send and receive email just fine in my Mail application using the same settings, but for my eFic install, the emails have mysteriously stopped being sent from my address just a few days ago. If it is possible that my domain has been blacklisted for some reason, is there anything I can do? I do have access to other email addresses with SMTP (GMail, .Mac, etc.), but I'd prefer to keep using the one with my domain. Should I contact my host to see if they can create a generic SPF record for me?

Do you have a test account for us? Yes; Username: Test Account; Password: tester

ETA: I don't know why it would have been working before 12/10 and not after, but I reverted the settings back to how they originally were and added ':26' to the end so that it uses Port 26, which is what my server requires. I successfully sent/received a Contact Us email to/from different addresses, but a user that was having problems getting the emails told me she DID NOT receive an email alerting her of a password change-- after I made the fix and tested the Contact Us form, I changed the passwords of all the users that had requested a new password and whom the Action Log said it had NOT sent them to. Does the system NOT email people when their password changes?

Hm have you tried asking your host at surmunity.com? That's really the only suggestion I can give, to see if maybe they changed any settings or something?

I did manage to solve it by changing the port to 26, but I'm wondering if emails are not sent out to the email address associated with an account when a password is changed. I've had users that said they didn't receive an email after I reset their passwords FOLLOWING my fix.

Bump. I can close this if someone can just answer me this: are emails sent when someone changes their password? For example, if I as an admin change a password for a user, does it email the account on record?

I ran a test in which I modified the password associated with my test account - it has an email address that will get to me since I created a forwarder for it before I tried anything. Anyways, I still have not received any email on the password change so doesn't LOOK like it's going out at the time being.

If you as an admin change the password, one easy way around this would be to contact the member through the contact link on their profile and let them know of their new password. That's all I've gathered so far and since I don't use the script at its full potential at all time because our site is relatively quiet... maybe I'm missing something. πŸ™‚

As far as I am aware it does not email the member when either they or you (as an admin) change their password on their account
