Hi Everyone!

I am new to the eFiction scene, but I think I understand how to install and run the program. I've run PHP and MySQL Tests on my host server and they are working great, so I think I am ready to install. My question regards CHMODing the config.php and the folder where you are storing your stories and art. I have been told never to use CHMOD codes that end in 6 or 7. 770 and 660 are supposedly the same as 777 and 666 and a lot safer to use. Is this true for eFiction?

Also, I am assuming that you need to create the folder that you are going to store stories and art in and include it in your ftp upload. Is this true? If so where do you tell eFiction that this is the folder you want things saved to? Is that in the initial config?

One last question, can you as the administrator add to the ratings, categories, characters, classifications, etc. after the initial config?

Thanks!

It depends on your server setup whether CHMOD 660 and 700 would work for you.  Generally, I've had little luck with anything other than the settings as stated.  Sometimes you can get 755 to work on the folders.  After installation you can CHMOD the config file to 644.  My suggestion is to use the settings from the readme during installation then slowly back down the settings one at a time after installation until things stop working.  The lower the # in CHMOD the safer you are, but the less you can do.  The stories folder needs to be executable because you're adding new files and sub-folders to it through the script.  The config needs to be editable (666) during initial installation and can then be set to 644 after that.

You do need to create the folder for your stories/art.  Do this before installation and during installation you'll be asked for the name of the folder.

No ratings, categories, characters, etc. are installed during the initial installation. You will add/edit/delete those from the admin interface once the script has been installed.

Thanks so much Tammy! Just one more question. I was planning on installing all of the eFiction files into a single folder inside the public_html directory and pointing my link to the index.php from there, this should work, right?

So you're going to have:

http://www.yoursite.com/thisfolder/

Where thisfolder is the folder where eFiction is installed.  Then you plan to point www.yoursite.com to thisfolder via htaccess?

Should work.
