Can characters be applied to all subcategories within a category but not sitewide? For example, I have stories intended for the various manga/anime created by CLAMP. I want to give each manga/anime title their own subcategory, but CLAMP is notorious for having their characters make crossover appearances in multiple works. I don't want to have to add the same characters over and over in each subcategory, but neither do I want to have CLAMP characters available as a choice in the "Harry Potter" category.

Slap me if the script already takes this situation into account. It just occurred to me that organizing things like this might be an option.

So is it possible?

I don't think they can be, unfortunately. I think the database probably only allows one category ID to be assigned to each character. Either that or the script wouldn't know what to do with more and flip out.

It will suck to have the same character multiple times, though. Especially when browsing by character name, because there's no way to combine them, and the list will show more than one.

I think the only way to get around this would be to assign all the characters to the top-level CLAMP category and leave it unlocked. You can still have the subcategories, but they'd have to pick the toplevel to get the characters, and then the subcategory to put their fic into the right category. (Thus they'd have to have their story in at least two categories.)
