I had a good working version 3.3.1 ... then I updated to 3.4.2 ... everything worked fine.
So I went to the admin tool and wanted also update the Challenge module. There it was ... ERROR.

Now I was pissed off.
I deleted everything to do a fresh install, so maybe the problem would have gone by then. But no, now I can't install it at all, anymore.
It says that there is an error to connect the database, but I didn't change anything. When I put my old config.php there where the new should be placed the installation works fine, but I get ERRORS on the site furtheron.

I hate that. Why is it always such a fight to install that software?
Everytime again. I really goes on my nerves.

When I finally get it everything is wonderful and it works fine, but before that, it is really just a fight.
I did everything after the notices in "Readme.txt" but it never or only in very view times it works like it should.
😐 😳

Did you back up your database before you tried to upgrade?

If you did, you can just restore that, and you will have your "good working version 3.3.1" back with the 3.3.1 files you saved.

If you didn't... well if you are trying to reinstall a brand new copy, meaning no members or stories or anything, you are probably forgetting to delete your database. Delete you database, and try again. You are probably getting the errors because the script is trying to create a table that already exists. But I don't know. I can't see the errors.

For us to help you, you need to supply all the information. Otherwise, WE MAY NOT HELP YOU.

Ok, rule number one: next time you have an error with the challenges module come here and ask about that error. It probably would have been much easier for us to help you with that error than to help fix the multiple errors you are getting now. Like Jan said, we need more information that ERRORS. What are the errors? What are you doing when you get the errors?

You can't do a fresh install with an old database--it doesn't work like that. That probably accounts for some of your ERRORS.

Well, sorry for my nasty mood last time. I was really pissed off the problems I get everytime I make an update on efiction.

I will try to explain a bit more detailed.
Actually the archive is working, but when I go to the members I get this Error.

A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: SELECT stories FROM efic_fanfiction_authorprefs WHERE uid = '6'
Error: (1054) Unknown column 'stories' in 'field list'

I have a backup and I have pasted the table datas from the table "authors" into the database, but I don't get the problem solved.
Shall I delete everything again and install the version 3.3.1 new, play the backup of my database into the the empty database and update efiction again?
The problem came on when I updated the mudule "Challenges"...

You should definitely revert to the last working version you were using, then try to update again. Don't empty your database though...you need all that info for your site to work! Plus the update script might have changes it wants to make to the database, but won't be able to do it if your tables are empty.

Yeah do everything until it was working and DO NOT update challenges if that is what you were having problems with. My advice is to make a second site and try to update challenges on that site. A second site can be down and not working without stressing you out. If you can figure it out on that one, then you will be able to figure it out on the real site.

You still did not post a link from your site where the error occurred.
