i'm afraid i am missing something. i just don't know what. but nothing is working and i don't want to mess around too much b/c it seems like every time i've done something to the site, the site screws up so i'm going to just abandon this effort. thanks everyone, for trying to help.

Don't abandon it. If you haven't put in any mods, just reupload your efiction files. Just don't up the tinymce, install or skins folders. Sometimes just replacing those files will fix the problem.
