I'm fairly sure I've put this in the right forum -- if not, my apologies.
I am part of an older fandom that has lots of fanfics hosted on other sites. Rather than copy the text of these stories to put them on my eFiction-run archive (especially since I cannot reach all of the authors to ask for their permission to do so, and it would take a LOT of time), would it be somehow possible to create entries for these fics so that readers could still search for them through my site? That is, a way of creating story blocks that would appear in searches, but when you click on the story link, it would take you to the site where the fic was hosted.
My knowledge of php is woefully little, and I would appreciate any comments anyone has.
Conceivably you could... on one of my archives that were stories harvested from a yahoo mailing list, there is one author who never posted her stuff on the yahoo group, just a link to the stories elsewhere. I set her up as an author. When you get to her fic, it have something like this set up. It works as long as the link is still valid.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
On my site there's a module (still in development) that allows the recommendation of off-site stories. It's working, but there are probably bugs. You can try it over at my site on the 3.0 Preview.

If I remember correctly, the stories listed on the rec module, are not searchable though through the main story search and browse areas. They are in their own section. So don't expect them to mix with the actual story entires on your site.
I'm not sure, but the rec module might create links on the catgeories at the top saying if there are recs listed in that category.
The link above was bad, here's the real one:

This is actually quite easy to do. I do something similar on my site. ( http://www.ffstories.net)
The only problem that I have run into, is that I either have to manually add users to my site for the people that authored those stories, or put who the story is by in the title, so it will come up saying the title by authors name by yourname. When you post a story, it always says who it is by, by default, so if the admin is posting the story on behalf of another author, and you put the authors name it the title, it will say by (author) by (admin). For example, one of the stories I have listed is called Masks, by diagonalist. On my site, it looks like "Masks by diagonalist by Therio". I do not know if there is a way to remove the "by Therio" line when you post a story.
The first thing you will need to do is go into Admin, then Settings, and then click on Site Settings. Under allowed tags, you will have to add <a>. This will enable you add links to another web site from within your own efiction setup.
Then what I do on my site is when I go to add a new story, I put the link to the story in the title line. Using the same example, for the title I have "<a href="" http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1224253/1/">Masks</a> ;" by <a href="" http://www.fanfiction.net/u/313108/">diagonalist</a>" ;" (without the quotation marks). Then I fill in the Summary, rating etc, just as if I was posting the story to my own site. Theoretically, you should be able to leave the story text empty, as you will be taken to the actual story on the other site when you click on the story title.
To be safe however, I add a link to the story in the story text area as well.
Therio
If you use the rec module, it lists the rec of the story as "Title" by Author, and below it, in other info area, it lists who it was recced by.
People are allowed to review the rec, and you get a score.

If you still need help with this just let me know, as I did exactly this for one of my sites.
