I seem to be posting a lot lately. ๐
I'm getting the 406 Not Acceptable error when I try to edit my stories. To be honest, when I still had version 2.xx, I had this problem with certain stories that I had to go directly to the saved file itself in ftp and hand-edit; they simply would not let me do anything through efiction. Then I tried updating to 3.5.1, updating went south, so I scrubbed it all (but saved a few important files from PhpMyAdmin, the stories folder, etc), installed from new, and replaced the fresh files with some of the old files. Which, thanks to the attempt to update, were 3.5.1 version files, but still had the info I needed, so it was something of a fresh install/recovery.
Now it seems like a whole lot more of my stories are giving me the error. I searched the forum and found the "curl" fix; tried that, didn't work. Replaced the word entirely. Didn't work. Make sure TinyMce was clicked off. Same problem. Even tried the .htaccess file edit fix. No dice. I can go into the files themselves and hand edit, but it's a pain guessing which story is which (since they're numbered in the system), or, if I go into PhpMyAdmin, I still have to hand type. I'd like to figure this out.
This is exactly what shows up:
406 Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /fallendown/stories.php could not be found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have no problem uploading stories (which I did when I created one to test my recent stories block), and a couple of stories I edited with no problem. But a majority of them are giving me this error, and since it's a solo archive, which means I'm the admin as well as sole author, this is an irritating mess.
The error is not with efiction, but with apache settings that your webhost may have set. Mod-security might be set to not accept thngs like ampersands (i.e. &) or certain characters and diacritics. Googling here:

The site suggests a .htacess file edit (was that the one you were talking about in your post?). If that doesn't work maybe you should contact your webhost and see if they can turn off the feature.

Mucking around in eFiction since circa 2001 (ver. 1.0)
Now running v.3
Even tried the .htaccess file edit fix.
Yes, I tried that one. No worky. Sigh. I even gave it overnight, to see if it would take. I guess I have to contact my host.
Ok, as an update, I contact my host about the problem, and gave them the means to replicate it.
Their answer?
Hello,
Your text is triggering a mod_security rule for penis enlargement comment spam.
The text โmaleโ followed by natural, pill (spill), or attraction is the triggering the rule.

Uhhhhh. Yeah. I laughed. Because, whaaat? So I asked that mod_security be turned off. We'll find out if that works.
UPDATE:
Yes and no. Now, I don't get a 406 error. However, no matter what I do, once I hit Add or Preview, all it does is end up back at the same Edit Chapter page, with the original text back in place. It just keeps reloading, essentially. I am using the Word copy function (and I even tried copying it directly without the Word function), and it's the same thing. I'm assuming it must be length, but I don't know why; I had the limits at 30000. When I changed it to 0, it keeps reloading, but now, there's no text in the box. When I checked the actual chapter, however, it still has the same old text I'm trying to fix.
It seems to be having a problem after about 10,000 words.
