Very very nice. How well does the script perform under that type of load?

Header is a bit large for my taste, but it does not look bad at all, just takes a lot of screen space.

Great job with the site.

Nice colour scheme! The banner is a little too over powering and large, but it looks really cool.

I wonder if they're waiting for a more stable release before upgrading, or if they're even considering a move to v2 at all. Would be a lot of work to upgrade all the custom hacks.

The "Haxxored by Gred&Forge" theme is cute.

As far as I know, they've almost waned completed off the efiction script, and they've got a handful of coders who have made HEAVY modifications.

The Fred and George theme is actually one that was used on April Fools Day, telling users that they sight had been taken over by two new people. They also pulled another prank this year.
They're a great bunch of people, and the site is marvelous, it's like Harry Potter heaven.

First of, I realise I making a large bump, but I thought it was justified.

My name is Nick and I'm currently the official coder at harrypotterfanfiction.com, recently I recieved an email from an eFiction 3.* user who had read these boards looking for performance improvements for his install.

I wasn't aware (and nor was the site owner I believe) that this mention even existed, so I came searching to clear up any future inquiries.

First and foremost, HPFF is based of eFiction 1.1 - and I say 'based of' very loosely, because after 2 years of continuous development by several different coders only a few lines from the admin cp remain of eFiction 1.1.

HPFF is indeed a very large archive: The archive is currently the home of 64,703 members including 16,313 contributing authors, who have written over 257,850,700 words in 132,354 chapters of 36,236 stories. We also recently passed the million review mark, at this exact moment there are 1,041,000 reviews in the archive. The archive recieves an average of 50 million hits per month. Last year we recieved just over 40,000 new chapter submissions.

In terms of performance, our development has included many fixes which have directly and indirectly improved server load (As you can imagine, server load is at a premium). Although I can't speak for more recent versions of eFiction, 1.1 certainly calculated to much on the fly (authors.php comes to mind) rather than adding the ocassional extra field (in some cases, just a single boolean) to the database which would cut page execution time (and SQL queries) by several orders of magnitude.

For those who are familiar with Big O notation, we moved some procedures from O(n*n) to O(n) or even O(1).

I wish the developers and all the users of the more recent versions of eFiction the best of luck with this fantastic piece of software.
