I am at a loss for where to post my questions because I have SO MANY questions - and I don't know where to start.

I'm a fic writer. I post fic on various fic sites. I want to start a new fic site to serve as an archive and a place for others to post their stories, banners for said stories, etc.

1. Yes, I bought host room on inmotionhosting.com
2. Yes, they will allow eFiction to be run on their site.
3. Yes, I know how I want my site to look (I've browsed many of your sites and previewed the skins), and would like to have one modified to my specifications (color, placement of certain things)
4. Yes, I have downloaded eFiction 3.5.2 to my computer
5. Yes, I have read the wiki that came with the application - many times
6. Yes, I have read many, many topics and conversations in the forum

and

7. Yes, I am still thoroughly confused!

The first stumbling block I've found is the whole FTP uploading process. Maybe. That might not be the first problem.

Is there anyone available who has a fanfiction site, running 3.5.2 who would be willing to help a complete stranger NEWBIE with this seemingly daunting task? Sometimes the easiest way to do something isn't always the best way to do it - but you don't know which is which until you've already done something and you look back and go dang! WHY didn't I do that in the first place?

Thank you all so very much!
Shannon

What questions about FTP do you have? That's not really an eFic question as much as a hosting company question, but I can try to answer.

The basic procedure is to first set up an FTP account. This is usually fairly simple and typically can be done through whatever control panel your host uses. They will most likely have an FAQ about it. Then you can download any of several FTP client programs to use to actually transfer the files. I use Filezilla. Most of the time the default settings work pretty well, but again, your host will have specific instructions on what you should do for that. You can also usually do it command line style, but I don't even bother with that when there are so many easy to use graphical interfaces out there.

Thank you Lyndsie -

My questions really are about eFiction... and FTP... and patches... and skins... I'm sure once I've chatted with a few members, I'll be able to correctly place my questions in the right categories. I have a feeling there will be many. πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the reply though - and it did help πŸ™‚

I'm sure we'll have answers. : ) Just make sure to fill out the support request template whenever necessary and to read the sticky topics in each board, and you should do fine. A search of the forums might also help, since I know there are some fairly common questions. Those are usually in the wiki, too. I know it can be a bit daunting for a new user (I remember quite well).

Mega thanks to Jacci for helping me learn the ropes and for the FTP assistance!

eFiction volunteers - a nicer bunch of people I'll never 'meet'.
