Hi there - I'm Shannon.... newbie .... and with the excellent assistance of Jacci (BIG HUGS!), we were able to get eFiction downloaded, FTP'd and uploaded to my host server. I did a little poking around on the Admin level and see that I have NO FREAKING CLUE as to where to begin!

What I'm looking for is someone willing to babysit me, hold my hand so to speak, and help guide me along the New eFiction Owner road. I've read the tutorials, and the wiki, as well as the forums for new installs/3.5.2 versions - and yet I'm still in a pickle.

Somewhat simple things that I'd like to accomplish: modifying a Kali skin that I think would work fine for my site... adding a straightforward live chat box to the front page of the site (is that called a module? add-on?)... help in troubleshooting things that my members say they're running into as we build the database up/fill in with stories (image uploading, for example)... setting up a test site (!! maybe that should be #1 on my list - I'm pretty clueless even as to how to put my goals in order!)... General knowledge so that my ineptitude isn't so glaringly obvious should I be hit with questions once we go 'live' to our fandom.

If you've got patience and some time, hopefully I can make it financially worth your while.

You can email me here, send me an IM (I'm on yahoo messenger and MSN messenger both as shannon3n88).

Me and my fanfic archive site look forward to hearing from you!

~Shannon

Hi Shannon,

It seems like most of what you have detailed is something we do for free in general. If you are patient with the forum, then hopefully the forums will be patient and supportive with you too.

modifying a Kali skin that I think would work fine for my site... I am not sure what Kali's stipulations are, but I think I have come across threads like this before.

adding a straightforward live chat box to the front page of the site (is that called a module? add-on?) I think what you are looking for is a shoutbox, which is already a "block" for eFiction.

help in troubleshooting things that my members say they're running into as we build the database up/fill in with stories (image uploading, for example) Generally, if your members run into any problems, it might be something eFic-wide; as such, it is always useful to post the problems so, if it IS an eFic problem, Tammy can get it sorted in the next release.

setting up a test site (!! maybe that should be #1 on my list - I'm pretty clueless even as to how to put my goals in order!) A test site is essentially a closed-doors version of your current site that you can work on in the background. πŸ˜‰ I duplicate my archives and then set everyone's e-mail to a dummy one (often the site)/disable e-mail notifications so they won't be aware of its presence.

Howdy Elle,

Jacci and Lyndsie have helped me tremendously with their patience, guidance and teaching/explanation manners - it's been quite a nice experience dealing with them! I can't thank them enough πŸ™‚

* The live chatbox is an actual chatroom-style window that I've seen on the front page of a few sites... not the Shoutbox. The shoutbox is limited in that you have to scroll and scroll to find what someone said if there are many people 'shouting'. My fandom would benefit greatly from this as a place to meet up and chat during live TV events.

* The Kali skin modification would be my own image in the top banner, and a color change - nothing more.

* Since I am in no way attempting to build my own skins, would the test site still benefit me?

I'm here, poking around the skins folder in the forum.... I think my authors would be thrilled to have a place to start posting their stories ASAP, but I've put them off until I get the exact skin I want up and running.

Thanks again everyone!

Ah, an actual live chat! I believe there was some live chat discussion going on in the forums about a module or a block? Perhaps it was you, I am not sure! XD  Have you thought of installing a chat system and making it a "pop-up"? That way, your users could chat in a separate window whilst still being able to browse the site without having to "jar" the chat.

Which Kali skin is this? It is frustrating to have your site all ready to go sans the perfect skin -- I think we have all had that problem once or twice.

Also, a test site might be beneficial regardless of skin testing. You might want to make a modification on your site, for example, and prefer to mod in a test environment rather than the live archive. πŸ˜€
