This idea came to me while I was up until 2am surfing TvTropes, so I thought I would contribute more to the Forum instead of just asking questions.

Half a Dozen Wiley Was to Promote Your Archive

Now, we all know the obvious ways: A link to your archives in your Email or on forum signatures. Buttons for which people can use to link to your site from their own sites, Topsite lists and directories. These ways all work, of course. But have you ever considered

1) Crossposting.

Yes, Crossposting. I am assuming that you, Founder of the Archive, also write fic and post it in your archive which you so lovingly maintain. I know I do.
Whenever I write a fic for my fandom, I post it in the archive, My LJ and several LJ comms. And in the header I detail and link specifically where it has been crossposted to.

Title: Her Bad Heart
Rating: Teen/PG/T
Fandoms: REPO! The Genetic Opera
Characters: Original Character, Repo-Man
Wordcount: 540
Synopsis: A girl runs from the Repo-Man
Warnings: Mild language.
Disclaimer: I don't own REPO! Thank god someone does though. You visionaries, you!
Crossposted: [info]repofiction, the Repo! forums, my LJ and The Genetic Archive.

This way, people from the RepoFiction community will see "Oh! There's an archive!" and possibly visit and find more great fic.

2) Skins:
If you have a DeviantArt or other online art gallery, try putting up some of your specialty skins like here and here. If you're part of Groups in DA, try submitting your skins to their galleries.

3) Invites:
Go to FFn, Mediaminer, Ficwad, whatever and find your fandom. Read through some of the submissions, find the best ones and invite users to crosspost to your archive. Make them feel special, wanted, but remain level and not over the top in your praise for there fic. This is an easy but time consuming method.

4) Wikis:

Wikipedia has Notability requirements, but TVTropes doesn't. I've taken the liberty to start off a "Notable Fanfic Archive" entry here. All you have to do is fill it out!
The code for mine was

[[ http://repo.fan-fix.com Repo! The Genetic Archive]]: A fanfiction archive for RepoTheGeneticOpera

and

[[ http://silenthill.fan-fix.com Silent Hill Fanfiction Archive]]: A fanfiction archive for SilentHill

FanLore also has eFiction Archive List, which lists Archives that use eFiction.

In Wikis, try finding your fandom and putting links to your archive in the External Links section.

5) Youtube.
I haven't tried this myself for my archives, but A friend of mine made a commercial for my webcomic and it has brought in some interest.
Back when Crunchyroll was an illegitimate source for anime, they had a pretty swanky commercial.
The bonus to this is that videos can go viral pretty easily, especially if you have a big fandom like Harry Potter or Naruto.

6) Share and Share Alike.

We're all in this for fun and we all want to help our fandom. If you know a resource, share it! If you know about a rotten apple in fandom, tell people. If it's within your power to help a fellow archiver, be it with link exchanges or whatever, take a bit of time to do it. Build up a reputation for yourself and your sites as a helpful and kind person with an good vibe. People like good people who are open and honest. Be transparent, give your users the feeling that they have some say in how the archive is run. You have the final decision of course, but don't make wild changes without first letting your users know.

Thanks for this Q, I think this might do better in the Archive/Website Administration forum though, so I will be moving it there.

Just a note on #1, be careful with this one, because some sites may list this as against their TOS/Agreement, so always check before you do any cross-posting. I would definitely recommend putting links to your sites into your forum signatures, and or banners depending if the forums allow it.

Oh and don't forget affiliations/sister sites, banner exchanges, link exchanges, webrings, plugboards and rotations!
