I originally posted this here at ff_archivists, but I suppose I might get a better reception here.
Anyway, I had this idea. It'd be kind of like a "scheme" until a certain point. I was thinking to give my users something back in return for being a "member" of the community.
At this point, it seems pretty innocent to me.
It was essentially like those "hey! you can get a paid account at this site, but if you don't want to pay, you can get a free subscrip for every x stuff you have" but because the archive doesn't have a paid account feature, it kind of went paid account to that site instead.
Anyway, I then constructed some sort of webpage for a preliminary mock-up, that you can see here, and then, when I got to the end, I realised the legal issues.
Crap. It's fan-fiction. This could no longer be seen as a reward for being an active member. Nope, I suppose it could be seen as making profit from writing and posting up fanfiction.
Now... I'm curious. I'd still like to go ahead with the idea, but I'm not so sure.
What do you guys think?

No, don't do it. You can reward your members with cool features, but not money.
Whoever said nothing is impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

It's really all up in the air. There shouldn't be anything wrong with paying them like that (or letting them pay for certain services, as long as you keep the fanfic free). But I can see other issues that might arise.

I know. :'( But the features thing is what bugs me... I mean, I know LJ add-ons and dA subscrips can equate to money, but the original thought was that those were going to be features; then I thought it through a bit more and was like "ah. Damn."

Well for example take a look at bad corp fiction that's become mainstream and guilible users are getting sucked into it: FanLib.com. they offer 'prizes'.
What I personally find funny about their website is how much money they must be making, yet their forums use phpBB2 π it made me laugh out loud the first time I stumbled upon their forums.
