How do you define good and successful? There is no way to answer that question without numbers.

Let me try to rephrase that. How much is needed on avarege by other archive owners who have had their site for around a year?

My site is fairly average, and it uses about 2GB of bandwidth per month. By comparison, this site, which, granted is not technically an efiction site, uses about 10GB. A lot of bandwidth will be taken up by search engine robots, especially Google, so make sure you write a good robots.txt file to keep away the bad ones. If you don't care if anyone ever finds you, you can exclude Google too, and save a lot of bandwidth.

Also, note, that if you create a design that has a lot of graphics, then you will use a lot more bandwidth.
