Sometimes the updated date on stories doesn't change when a new chapter is added. It's happened a couple of times to my archive at least, but I'm not starting a log of them until now. I thought that they might have something to do with my site going down because they seemed to happen after that. Like, if someone updated their fic right as the site went offline? I don't know. But maybe keeping a log will help if it is a bug and other people are having the same problem. Authors usually alert me to the problem through e-mail or the shoutbox on the site.

Today it was Whelp II:

Author added chapter, validated author. I'm not sure if the update alerts e-mails went out for this story. I went into the database and automatically changed the date to be today, and sent e-mails out to everyone on the favs list.

I've got another one just now.

A Place for Warriors:
http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1348
Author added chapter, validated author. Manually edited the updated date to be today.

Do alerts go out if the date doesn't update?

A new story was just posted by a validated author and that showed up...

Happened twice to
Walk the Shadows by jharad17

http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1369

Validated author added new chapters. I manually changed the update date both times after the author alerted me to the fact that it didn't change when they added new chapters twice this week.

The first time the update e-mails did go out, but the second time they didn't go out.

jharad17 says

It seems, to me, the problem with the updates is because of a long loading time when I add a chapter?  It didn't happen when I loaded one at work, which has a somewhat faster connection, although mine at home is pretty fast--it's cable.  I get an error saying the page didn't load, and then I see that it did load, but that the date hasn't changed.  I don't know if the two are connected, but since I'm not a big believer in coincidence, I'll assume they are.

If he's timing out on the update there's probably nothing wrong in the script.  It's just that he's timing out before it finishes.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Several users had this problem, but I think maybe it's just my host.

I'm getting this as well. I've had to change the update date for a lot of them. Some validated authors complain that it takes a long time for their submission to go through. But others say theirs go through just fine and their dates are updated as well.

I haven't had this problem for a while. I think it's just the host timing out.

Ask them when they are updating their fic. If it's during a high traffic time, that might be why.
