URL to your eFiction:  http://starwarschicks.com/archive
Version of eFiction: 3.3.1
Have you bridged eFiction, if so with what?:  No
Version of PHP:  4.4.7
Version of MySQL: 5.0.45
Have you searched for your problem: Yes
If so, what terms did you try:  various combinations of: challenges, module, error, browse.php?type=challenges
State the nature of your problem:

The challenges module is not working.  http://www.starwarschicks.com/archive/browse.php?type=challenges

It just gives an error:  Error! We encountered an error. Please go back and try again.

I uninstalled the challenges module (with great strife and frustration) and reinstalled it with just as much strife and frustration, and it's still giving the same lack of results.  I am able to set Anon reviews (I have it set to NO) - though the button interestingly enough likes to jump to the page left when you click it.  But otherwise, it doesn't seem to be working, and I'm baffled.  No one else seems to have had this problem, and it's just a generic Error message which isn't helping me any.  I even turned DeBug mode on and it didn't do anything.

How did you install the module? Did you go to

http://www.starwarschicks.com/archive/modules/challenges/install

and install it that way or did you go to through Admin->Modules->Install this module?

Both.  The first time I tried using the link on the Admin -> Modules page.  Then I uninstalled it and ran the direct install link.  But the link on the Admin Modules page runs the same install script, so it probably shouldn't matter which way I tried it.  The results are the same, at least, since neither worked.

Confirmed.

Error! We encountered an error. Please go back and try again.

http://genficrecs.freehostia.com/tester/browse.php?type=challenges

i'm not sure why it's not working. The modules table and the challenges table look the same as the one I have on my other site, which is working. I copied the challenges table from my working site and inserted it into my nonworking site. No change. I copied the panel url as well. Still not working.

It won't let me uninstall it. I get:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare categoryitems() (previously declared in /home/www/genficrecs.freehostia.com/includes/corefunctions.php:26) in /home/www/genficrecs.freehostia.com/includes/corefunctions.php on line 26

I think this is a bug. Moving to the bug forum...

Edit: I managed to make this work. I have no idea what made it work finally, but I somehow managed to uninstall the table through the admin panel (I got an error different from the one above, something about anon challenges) and then by using phpmyadmin to drop the challenges table completely. Then I reinstalled through the admin panel and it worked.

http://genficrecs.freehostia.com/browse.php?type=challenges

I can't seem to get this to work on my other site though, using the 3.3.1 files.

I'm taking the challenges folder from my other site that has working challenges and replacing the files (which are probably the exact same files as I updated the working site with 3.3.1 when it came out). Then I'm uploading the files, and uninstalling the module.

This is the error I get:

A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: DELETE FROM `testerfanfiction_modules` WHERE code_module = 'Challenges'
Error: (1054) Unknown column 'code_module' in 'where clause'

When I go into the admin modules panel, it lists the challenges module as installed, but when I click on the uninstall link, it says that the module is not installed. I go into phpmyadmin and delete the challenges rows in the fanfiction_modules table (it's saved there twice). I go back and install it and it's still not working. It says the challenges_module is version 1.2.

I try uninstalling again

A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
Query: ALTER TABLE `testerfanfiction_series` DROP `challenges`
Error: (1091) Can't DROP 'challenges'; check that column/key exists

http://genficrecs.freehostia.com/tester/modules/challenges/uninstall.php?confirm=yes

I'm installing it through the modules panel there, but I tried uninstalling through the admin challenges area too. I just can't get it to work.

Sorry, I know this is a whole lot of nothing.

Edit the browse panel for the challenges module through the admin interface and change the link to be:

modules/challenges/browse.php

I didn't have Challenges under B - Browse in the panels, so I added it. It works now. πŸ™‚ Thank you Tammy.

Edit the browse panel for the challenges module through the admin interface and change the link to be:

modules/challenges/browse.php

That's a blank page.  πŸ˜•  http://www.starwarschicks.com/archive/modules/challenges/browse.php  That's not much more help than a generic error.  😐

I'm not getting any of the errors Jan did.  I did have to go into phpMyAdmin to uninstall the module manually, and I did have the error about anon_challenges not letting me reinstall it, but I manually deleted anon_challenges from whichever table it showed up in.  Once that was gone, it let me do a clean install, but but with the same results as the first time I tried.

It's not a blank page.  It's a page that's included inside the main browse page.  You're not supposed to access it directly.

You are supposed to go to the admin panel and click on the "panels" link to open the panels. Then edit the Challenges panel to have a different url listed in its settings.

/admin.php?action=panels&type=B

That's the page listing the Browse Panels in the Admin area.

I didn't have the browse challenges panel, so I created it. You may have to do the same only if you don't have it either.

The url that the browse Challenges panel should have:
modules/challenges/browse.php

Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh!  Thanks Jan.  I'd blame my misunderstanding on my headcold, but in truth, I think I'm just blind.

It's working now.  πŸ˜€

I didn't get this on my site, but another I help manage. When I click on Options in the Module panel, I get this above the skin. Also, the challenges don't appear in the info block anymore. I have uninstalled this several times, and re-installed but it doesn't seem to quite work properly. The uninstall doesn't work very well either. I am unsure if this isn't working because I didn't know that my friend hadn't already updated it to 1.1, before updating it to 1.2, or if something else is wrong.

Can you please check and see if this is still an issue with 3.5? Thank you!
