We are running a very old version of efiction, I believe the last stable version but it's running php5, which is deprecated. My host has run an update and now php is at 8 and efiction wont' run it. We're at a point where they can't manually adjust php for it to work. 

They talked me into moving to a private server because it could run php lower than 8... I should have known it didn't work, but I wanted to give it a shot. Today I got an email that basically says they can't support anything below 7. I don't understand how other archives are still running on deprecated php?  Do I need to move to a different host? 
 
Am hoping someone can help provide some insight. A tech got it to work earlier, then I asked the migration team to move over one last folder and... boom. 
 
I am happy to pay for time and expertise if anyone has any knowledge to  throw at me. I am not techy at all. Also happy to send the message their migration team sent over that basically said 'get someone to update your software'. OK so easy.

I built it using your unofficial work for the 8.2 PHP. I am good at internet and forum investigations.:) It actually works best for me on 8.4 just as well so that's where I have it at currently.

I love the site! It looks beautiful. I haven't used Efiction for a very long time (Early user of 2006 efiction. We have come a ways, haven't we?). I decided to give it a shot again for my works. I just wasn't satisfied with the options of today, and this will be used for more than fanfiction in the future, so I wanted to get it right.

Some key things. Not problems, just to know for your testing. 

-All the skin designs are artphilia, I haven't tested any of the others. The site skins are so responsive, it just fits to use those for the latest versions.

-I made my own image folder. I just used the images from the last stable release and it worked.

-Doesn't backup on the archive maintenance. I don't know why but every time I ever did this in the past it always sucked for me. I use a host that lets me have weekly backups and restores anyhow though so everything is always protected. I also have a copy of the SQL from the actual PHP admin.

-I never added any extra modules or challenge things. It's not needed for the site.

-It worked out of the box basically for me. 

-Category images don't work. No idea why, I'm not technical. Probably me being dumb again, but I like the site with just my covers anyway.

 

I don't know if it's perfect, but I like it! I feel like everything is organized and can breath again. Thank you.

After I had a bit of trouble with the 3.5.8 version on my local server and on the Strato server, but got it to work, I then failed with the plugin epubversion for downloading epubs.

For years, this unique and great project has been on the rocks. It's a shame and sad, but I've now decided to change platforms with a heavy heart. Fictioneer for Wordpress is now my new choice and I can only say it's a great alternative.

Vielen Dank Jimmi für deine tollen Bemühungen. Nachdem ich mit der 3.5.8 auf meinem Lokalen- und auf dem Strato-Server etwas zu kämpfen hatte, aber es an laufen bekam, scheiterte ich dann an dem plugin epubversion zum epubs downloaden.

Seit Jahren ist dieses einzigartige, tolle Projekt nun am Rande des Abgrunds. Es ist sehr schade und traurig, aber ich habe mich nun auch schweren Herzens entschieden die Plattform zu wechseln. Fictioneer für Wordpress ist nun meine neue Wahl und ich kann nur sagen es ist eine tolle Alternative.
