In August my hosting service changed the type of server my site is hosted on which caused a tragic domino effect. I thought the problem was PHP 8, but now I'm not so sure. I can't log into cPanel and I created an HTML index page saying that we are experiencing technical difficulties and that page won't even load. I can't even access my site using FTP. As I was trying to work that out and back up my site, I'm afraid I deleted my site. Luckily I do have a backup of the Stories folder so that is safe. I'm at a loss. I don't know if my problem with my webhost and this new server. I'm in desperate need of advice and/or help in figuring out what is happening. I can't afford for my site not to be up and running. I'm afraid I may have to shut down my site permanently, but I'm not ready to make that decision yet. Please help!

I'm an admin for a fanfiction website fanfictalk.com, where we use efiction for our archives (fanfictalk.com/archives). We are on a shared server through TMD hosting and have a forums page using Invision software. I recently took over as admin after previous admin burnt out/ disappeared/ gave up the hobby. Only one of the founding site admin is around anymore, and even then very rarely and is not knowledgeable about all aspects of maintaining the software and server.

I'm capable of navigating the control panel on the archives for typical tasks (adding tags, validating stories, featuring stories, etc) when everything is working, but for a long time now we've had a problem where validation/reject emails do not send. In fact, no emails will send from the archives, so if someone needs to retrieve a lost password, they can't (I've just been resetting them manually when needed). As far as I can tell, we are running the most current version of efiction.

We were having a similar problem on our forums with automated emails not sending, and operating on the assumption that it could be an issue with our emails on our server (@fanfictalk.com), I was able to muddle my way through fixing that problem on the forums by using a gmail account instead. However, that workaround is not working on the archives and I'm stumped again. I'm lost when it comes to any issues involving the server, to the extent something there is the problem, or however it is that the software interacts with the server. If someone were to reply to this comment saying anything having to do with coding, I would have no idea what it means or what to do with it.

I'm looking for someone who may be able to help us troubleshoot our current archives -- the email problem, and if anything else there needs to be fixed or updated. We generate no income and are run by volunteers from within our own community. If someone were able to donate some time to helping us out pro bono it would be very appreciated, but also we can afford a fee for your services if you tell me what you would charge and how much time you believe this kind of issue might take to sort out.

You can message me on here, or email me at fanfictalk@gmail.com. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Hi!

Pretty much what the title asks... I want move my site to a different hosting service. Is there a recommended process for that? Off the top of my head, I think it would probably go something like this...

Install a new instance of eFiction at the new provider.

Test and confirm that it works properly.

Copy all of the content and settings from the old site to new.

Test again - confirm that all stats align.

If good, schedule the final cutover, where you...

Put the old site in Maintenance Mode

Copy the content and settings one last time.

Perform a final test on the new site to confirm everything is there.

If its good, implement your DNS changes to point to the new site.

Reopen for business.

While that seems relatively straight forward, there are a few things that bother me...

In terms of "Content and Settings", is it just the Contents and Skins (if you've added more) directories and the SQL database?

We have a "Backup" capability... do I just run a backup and then "restore" the files in the Zip to the new site? If so, what about the SQL database?

Regardless of how I do this, how do I make sure all the indexes are updated?

Part of my concern is timing, since I want to make sure that I do all this in the right sequence.

Please let me know how I should proceed. I DID try to read thru the older posts on this topic, but all the links people referenced were broken... possibly by changing over to the new forum.

Thanks!

I'm working on getting an archive up and running and one of the main features we want to have ready is TinyMCE 6 instead of the 3.whatever version is included. I'm planning on launching a big effort in August and I'd like to unveil something new for that.

Does anyone have any resources that could complete one or both.
