As it stands, the Sort Order next to the Search Term in Advanced Search does not work and uses the user's default sorting order regardless of the selection. Fine for Simple search, but not intended for Advanced Search. This is a very old issue.

How I got it to work: Use some code from browse.php.

Segment:

else {
	if($searchtype == "simple") {

Replacement:

else {
	$disablesorts = array( );

Segment:

"._SEARCHTERM.":

Hit enter after that line and add this (this is to keep the Sort drop-down menu spaced out from the Search Term textbox):

 ";

Segment:

 "._SORT.": "._ALPHA.""._MOSTRECENT."";

Replace with this:

 if(!in_array("sorts", $disablesorts)) $output .= ""._SORT.": <option value=\"alpha\"".(!$defaultsort ? " selected" : "").">"._ALPHA."<option value=\"update\"".($defaultsort == 1 ? " selected" : "").">"._MOSTRECENT."";

This is patched on my own fork, but just letting you (and anyone reading this) know.

Amusingly, I triggered this by accident a few days ago by testing random repeating characters, and they happened to be the percent sign, lol. Confused me for a moment, like the nonexistent co-authors Error 500 PHP 8 bug in includes/userlist.php I ran into nearly two months ago.

Bug in question: When choosing a skin, it would not save if that skin happens to be the same as the site's default skin.

Here's the patch:

1. Open user/editprefs.php
2. Line 37 - Original Line:

if($skinnew != $skin) $_SESSION = $skinnew;

3. Replace that line with the following:

if(($skinnew) != $skin || ($skinnew) == $defaultskin) $_SESSION = $skinnew;

4. Save and exit.

Modernization of codebase.

Misc security fixes here and there.

If you have an older site, we also now have an upgrader that should be able to update your site up to 3.5.7. https://update.efiction.org/v3/3.5/efiction-upgrade.zip

Note that this is not tested with custom community forks, just the official stuff from eFiction directly.

Also for obvious reasons, we were only able to test this locally in dev environments + remotely via DoRoyal. DoRoyal is a network we run, and is therefore pretty optimized for eFiction. I provide zero guarantees that the upgrade process will run smoothly. Upgrade at your own risk.

Though in all testing, it was smooth and simple. Be sure to back up your website and database before upgrading.

Consider this article our big and grand reveal of eFiction 4! While there’s not much to share as of right this second, I can at the very least confirm the following;

eFiction 4 will require PHP 8.3 or newer.

eFiction 4 is a full conversion of eFiction 3.x, rebuilt from the ground up.

eFiction 4 is backwards compatible with all previous 3.x stories / authors.

We’ll have more information soon.

We are running a very old version of efiction, I believe the last stable version but it's running php5, which is deprecated. My host has run an update and now php is at 8 and efiction wont' run it. We're at a point where they can't manually adjust php for it to work.

They talked me into moving to a private server because it could run php lower than 8... I should have known it didn't work, but I wanted to give it a shot. Today I got an email that basically says they can't support anything below 7. I don't understand how other archives are still running on deprecated php? Do I need to move to a different host?

Am hoping someone can help provide some insight. A tech got it to work earlier, then I asked the migration team to move over one last folder and... boom.

I am happy to pay for time and expertise if anyone has any knowledge to throw at me. I am not techy at all. Also happy to send the message their migration team sent over that basically said 'get someone to update your software'. OK so easy.

Thanks so much for any info you can pass on!
